Interview with Alesia Zyla

In honor of International Women's Day, we've had the privilege of interviewing the inspiring female founders behind some of our featured brands. At Seezona, we take pride in the fact that the majority of brands on our platform are female-founded. In this exclusive interview, meet Alesia Zyla, founder of the brand MAET. Gain insights into her perspective on navigating the world of fashion as a female entrepreneur and much more.

What inspired you to pursue a career in fashion design?

In Albania, growing up with the idea that you can become whatever you want is uncommon. In a developing country, practical life choices are expected. Despite wanting to create art since childhood, societal expectations led me to initially choose Business Management. After a year of discontent, I realized that becoming a designer was a more authentic decision. Now, I aim to prove that pursuing a career in fashion is practical and fulfilling. Growing up with the concept of pragmatism has steered me into minimalism, a defining element in my creations. Clothing is a canvas for artistic expression, and I aspire to challenge perspectives, educating others on minimalism, sustainability, and the artistic potential of clothing.

What, according to you, are the advantages and challenges of being a female designer?

As a female designer, being a woman is a tremendous advantage that the industry hasn't fully recognized yet. The unique perspective women designers bring, rooted in personal experiences, allows us to create designs that resonate with diverse realities. Balancing societal expectations in a historically male-dominated industry is a challenge, but it fuels my determination to contribute to positive change. I've created an all-female design team in my studio to empower other aspiring female designers.

If you could give one piece of advice to young female designers, what would it be?

I’m a Gen Z designer myself so I would give the same advice that I try to give myself each day. Firstly, recognize the strength from your personal experiences. Trust your instincts, cultivate your individual style, and don't be afraid to challenge norms. Your authenticity and distinct viewpoint can be your greatest assets. Another advice is to stay resilient, continuously learn and evolve, and remember your contributions are essential in shaping the future of fashion. Finally, always believe in your talent, advocate for your ideas, and pave the way for a more inclusive fashion landscape.

Do you have any specific women within the industry that you admire and get inspiration from?

I have Miuccia Prada as a guiding force, especially for the crucial role she has played in shaping the business and cultural aspects of the industry. Vivienne Westwood serves as another source of inspiration for me. Her creative ideas not only manifest in powerful designs but also taught me about the potential of using fashion as a means for political, social, and environmental criticism. Other women who inspire me are Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski, Clare Waight Keller, and Phoebe Philo.

What does it mean to you to be a part of Seezona’s platform, among a curated selection of talented female designers?

Being part of Seezona's platform is empowering and inspiring, especially for me as a young designer. It means joining a community of like-minded creatives who share a passion for pushing boundaries and reshaping the narrative in the fashion industry. Seezona not only offers visibility for my work but also magnifies the collective voice of female designers, spotlighting the diverse perspectives, styles, and stories we bring to the table. It's a recognition of the value and creativity that women contribute to fashion, providing a supportive space to celebrate our individuality and innovation.
